This breaks my heart

And it hurts especially bad because ordinarily I'm very proud of my country. So I really expect better from it, and when it lets me down, I take it pretty hard. And what's even worse is that it lets me down at the same time every year, when the government-sanctioned seal hunt starts.

Ugh. It's shameful, is what it is. I get so angry when I see stuff like this! It's 2008, people! We can turn Ethiopia into a garden and yet we can't seem to reign in our impulse to slaughter helpless baby animals!!

I do what I can, you know? I impede the hunters, I tell the seals that they're in danger, but I don't know what good it does. I'm only one man, and the hunters will fill their quota (270,000 last year) one way or another.

But if you'd like to help end the hunt, here are a few things you can do:

1. Avoid all Canadian seafood. This is to apply economic pressure to Canada. Some of the largest consumers of Canadian seafood are Red Lobster, Long John's Silvers, and Costco. All of these companies should therefore be avoided.

2. Need another reason to boycott Costco? They sell seal oil capsules and have refused to remove these from their shelves.

3. Avoid traveling to Newfoundland. This is to apply additional economic pressure.

4. Boycott fashion houses that profit from seal pelts. These are: Prada, Dolce & Gabbana, Birger Christensen, New Vogue, and Vogue Furriers.

5. These companies all profit from selling Canadian seafood and should also be boycotted: Acadian, Atlantic Pearl, Bay Shore, Blue Royal, Breakwater, Brunswick, Cape Cod, Canadian Cove, Century Seafoods, Classic (from Beothic), Clearwater, Deep Sea, Doyle, Fisherman's Finest, Fishery Products International (FPI), Fogo Island, Harbour View, Highliner Foods, Island Pride, Luxury (from Beothic), Northland, Notre Dame Seafoods, Ocean Choice, Ocean Elite, Ocean Leader, Ocean Queen, Ocean Select, Oram's Choice, Quinland, Quin-Sea, Sea Best (from Beaver Street Co.), Seafreez, Sea Fresh, St. Paul's, World Catch, and Violet brand.

6. Boycott any store that sells herbs that are made from seals. These products are Terra Nova, Canomega, and Omegavite.

Sigh. Thanks for listening.

God, what an insensitive coward you are!

How much more informed do I need to be to recognize that profit through massacre is evil? How much more informed do I need to be to understand that unjustifiably inflicting pain on another feeling being is wrong?

I've been there. I've seen what happens. I've heard the screaming, the thudding. I've smelled the blood and death and waste.

When you can talk to animals, when you can understand the cries of mother seals while their babies are butchered before their eyes, when you can comprehend the paralytic fear of your family being slaughtered around you and you are next, then maybe you can speak to me on this as though you had some knowledge of what you're talking about.

Until that day comes, you can keep your anonymous sniping to yourself.
